Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center
The Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center is the oldest and most comprehensive HIV services organization targeting Asian and Pacific Islander communities. The Center provides education, support, and advocacy for Asian and Pacific Islander PLWHA or individuals who are at-risk for HIV. The Center also has a long history of developing and executing successful media campaigns focused on HIV/AIDS anti-stigma and discrimination, anti-homophobia, and sexual diversity.
With funding from AED, the Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center developed an anti-stigma campaign targeting monolingual Chinese and Vietnamese people residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. The campaign included the development of posters, Public Service Announcements, editorials in local papers, two video documentaries, and the use of their existing Speakers Bureau to focus on speaking engagements that promote the objectives of the campaign. The primary goal of the campaign was to increase the acceptance of queer and HIV positive members of local Chinese and Vietnamese communities and thereby increase access to and utilization of HIV services, which have the potential to decrease morbidity and mortality associated with HIV.
More details on the outcomes of this project, under the first phase of the National HIV/AIDS Anti-stigma Initiative, will be posted shortly. Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center is also funded to implement a national, anti-stigma social marketing program in the second phase of the Initiative.
