Widespread homophobia hampers prevention efforts at all levels, including individuals denying their risk of infection due to internalized stigma and in the broader culture where anti-gay messages and the lack of support for sensitive and honest HIV prevention messages and programs are the norm. Such barriers have been linked to less successful coping mechanisms (Arend, 2003).
